If you’ve decided to take the leap and finally do something about a smile you’re unhappy with, there are a few solutions you may have already considered. One of the most popular versions out there right now is Invisalign braces. That being said, while many people seem to enjoy them, they’re far from perfect for everyone. So before you start making payments, consider the following factors to help decide if they’re right for your specific situation.
Are You Considered About Your Looks?
Of course, you’re worried about your aesthetics to some extent. Everyone is, but you also wouldn’t be considering Invisalign braces if you weren’t a little worried about your appearance. That being said, a lot of people don’t want to walk around with the old-fashioned braces we’re all used to (and many of us wore as kids). There is a stigma involved that a lot of adults like to avoid.
If this is a major concern for you, Invisalign braces are definitely worth considering. They’re made from an invisible material that makes it virtually impossible to notice that someone is wearing them. There’s loads more information on this here .
Do You Have the Discipline to Wear Them?
When you have traditional braces on, it’s not like they get installed and stay that way until it’s time to take them off. Instead, you have to see an orthodontist regularly in order to get them adjusted. The previous wire is generally removed and a smaller one is brought in to tighten the entire setup. By doing so, your teeth are forced to conform and straighten.
That being said, until it’s time to wear a retainer, your job is relatively simple. Basically, you just need to get creative with brushing your teeth and you’ll be fine.
With Invisalign braces though, you’re carrying far more of the responsibility. For example, you have to wear them for 22 hours a day. This means you can’t take them out for some reason and forget to put them back in. You’ll just be wasting your money and the future molds made will either become worthless or provide you with an extremely painful remedy.
On top of that, you’ll be in charge of most of the addressing. While you’ll still see your orthodontist from time to time, it’s up to you to remember every few weeks to change out the aligner you’re currently wearing for another. Again, forget to do this and pay the price.
What Problems Are You Suffering From?
For the most part, anyone who would be a candidate for the traditional type of braces could also use Invisaligns without an issue and get the results they want. That being said, some people have dental challenges that can’t be corrected with Invisalign.
For example, do you have a cross or under bite? If so, Invisalign braces most likely won’t be able to help you. If you’re hoping these braces will correct inconsistent height across the teeth in your smile, again, you’ll probably be in for disappointment. Likewise, if you’re worried about teeth that have rotated away from facing out, these braces won’t be up for the task.
Keep in mind, though, this is a generalization. Your teeth may be able to benefit from Invisalign braces despite the above challenges, so long as they’re mild.
Can You Afford Them?
Lastly, there’s no point in considering Invisalign Braces if you can’t afford them. In the majority of cases, traditional braces cost less than Invisalign, but that will depend on your specific issues.
The actual cost to you will depend on the provider you choose and where you live. However, most would consider between $3,500 and $6,000 reasonable, depending on your dental issues.
For those who are candidates for Invisalign braces, they remain a very popular choice. However, you need to ask yourself the above questions before going through with this procedure.
